Obby

Much like Obby, who is a piss-sheen covered thief, Dane Cook likes to "steal s***" too. Dane Cook reminds me of lots of other comedians, but that's why I like him so much. However, the resemblance isn't just in presentation or joke style -- the similarity goes beyond those qualities.

Apparently, Dane Cook lifted three of Louis CK's jokes for his CD Retaliation. Struck by a vehicle, itchy a-hole, and the bit with the nonsensical kid's name were pretty much taken directly off of Louis CK's live in Houston CD. This is nothing new in comedy -- Robin Williams started biting other people's jokes from the beginning of his career (even got his butt kicked a few times and got caught on Letterman doing Ray Romano's joke from 12 years earlier word for word), Denis Leary used Bill Hicks's comedy routines, and Carlos Mencia apparently uses other people's material. But still, it makes me think a little less of Dane Cook. He's still funny and most of his stuff is his, which makes it even more sad that he took Louis CK's jokes. But, he does rely very heavily on his presentation and his stage presence (both are great), not so much on his writing.

But, I study inadvertant plagiarism and most ideas that we think are ours are actually someone else's -- we just don't remember the source of the idea and attribute it to ourself. Maybe Dane caught Louis CK's act and forgot about it later when writing his own material? Whatever the case, he's still funny.

I guess Louis CK has the best outlook on the situation. On his own message board he wrote, "F--- it. Who cares?"

Can't argue with that.
