Books

Lest everyone think we are all mindless movie watchers, I shall now put up my list of favorite books.

I've ordered them within author. Palahniuk is my favorite author overall, but other than that it's pretty equal.

In order:
Choke
Survivor
Fight Club
Invisible Monsters
Diary
Lullaby
Fugitives and Refugees
Stranger than Fiction
All by Chuck Palahniuk.

In order:
Sirens of Titan
Slaughterhouse-Five
Breakfast of Champions
Cat's Cradle
By Kurt Vonnegut, Jr.
And all of Vonnegut's other novels, essays, short stories, and speeches. And yes, I've read them all (the published ones, anyway).

American Psycho
by Bret Easton Ellis

Chemical Pink
by Katie Arnoldi

Nine Stories
Catcher In The Rye
by J.D. Salinger

Penny Dreadful
by Will Christopher Baer

All of the Harry Potter series
by J.K. Rowling

The works of Edgar Allan Poe.

Fahrenheit 451
by Ray Bradbury

Those are the books, people.

Movies, movies, movies

Curse you, Jmac. Here's my list of enjoyable movies.

Fight Club: The line "You don't know where I've been" as Tyler shakes his bloody face over the bar owner's face is reason enough to have this movie listed. There are so many great quotes from this film. And Brad Pitt is shirtless -- um, I mean, the acting is great. Heh. Ed Norton is awesome. A great adaptation of the book -- didn't lose too much of anything, but managed to make the film slightly different. I do like the book ending better, though.

American History X: Another Norton flick. Great stuff. A little cheesy at times, but mostly awesome. It will make you uncomfortable, it will make you wince, it will make you laugh, cry, and squirm.

Rushmore: Possibly one of the greatest comedies ever. See it and then watch Bottlerocket. Not so much for any direct connection between the two. Good stuff. Bill Murray is hilarious. See The Royal Tennebaums while your'e at it. Heck, see all of Wes Anderson's movies from now on.

Ghostbusters: Again, Bill Murray is awesome. The beginning is the best part -- once they get into the major plot line of Zuul and all that (towards the end, especially) it gets a little tiresome after seeing it so many times.

Office Space: Hilarious. Mike Judge as Jennifer Anniston's boss is great.

O Brother, Where Art Thou: Gotta love this movie. Gotta love all of the Coen Brothers movies. "We thought you was a toad..."

LOTR trilogy: Awesome movies. So long, but so worth it. Effects that Lucas should try to copy instead of relying so heavily on CGI. A great mixture of models, miniatures, and CGI. And that kid from the Goonies was really good.

Newsies: Marvelous musical starring a youthful Christian Bale, who would later go on to star in another of my favorites, American Psycho. Ah, the juxtaposition of a Disney newsboy scamp against serial killing psychopath.

That's all I can think of off. I know there are some I missed.

This might be an artform...

Safe for Work

Yes, it looks bad, but click on some of the pictures...I promise they are ok to look at for all.

This strikes me as very interesting for some reason. I'm sure there is some psychological something-or-other (good to know the graduate education is going so well, huh) going on. Pattern recognition, perhaps? The mind filling in the porn gestalt from a part of a picture?

Fun stuff.

Reporting for duty...

I should be working, but work must wait. The call of duty clangs in my ears and reverberates in my brain like a fully functional Liberty Bell, not cracked nor resting as a monument, but a loud and proud Freedom Bell! A call for change, a call to me, Russell Shearer.

Johnathan McGinty has awakened me to the dire need for new leadership in the 12th District of this glorious state, Georgia. A need for youth, a need for principles, and a need for me, your write-in candidate, Russell Shearer.

I will not be bought by lobbyists or special interest groups -- the voice of the collective that is the voting public shall be my guide! I will not be the puppet of politics as usual. I will not shy away from the good fight. I will be a sword of Truth in what has become a dark and nefarious place, Washington. I will cut away the rank and file politicos that bandy about lies and deceit. I will trounce them on their own turf and leave them awestruck. I will obey and serve you to the best of my ability. For that is what I am called to do, serve my fellow Americans, my fellow Georgians, my fellow human beings.

Change is on the horizon and that change can only become a reality if you, my constituency, make it happen. We are on the forefront of great things, my friends, and together we will see them manifest and materialize.

Thank you.

Tuesday

Song: Minerva
Band: Deftones
Album: Deftones (2003)

I get all...numb
When she sings it's over
Such a strange numb
And it brings my knees to the earth

And God bless you all
For the song you saved us...

You're the same...numb
When you sing it's over
Such a strange numb
It could bring back peace to the earth

So God bless you all
For the song you saved us...oh...
For the hearts you break, everytime you moan...

I get all...numb
We're the same numb
And it brings our knees to the earth

So God bless you all
For the song you saved us..oh...
For the hearts you break, everytime you moan
And God bless you all on the earth...

Sweet Screaming Moses

Have you people seen the Burger King commercial for double croissanwiches?

"egg and meat and cheese...and meat and cheese"

What's with the King? Why is he so horrible?

Now!

Go buy the new Interpol album, Antics. Do it now.

That is all.

Too much TV

As much as I fear putting this in writing, I’m going to do the TV schedule thing that Jmac and Meimi recently did. Ah, fun indulgences.

Sunday – Family Bonds 10pm HBO

The wife, for some strange reason, intrigues me. I guess it's the candid sex talk at the nail salon and the fact that she's a big girl. I loves the big girls. Plus, she's hot in that trashy New Jersey way. The guys on the show are hilarious! The nephew, the son, the dad -- all of them crack me up. Add to all of that the fact that it's like Cops, sort of, and I'm hooked.

Monday – Still Standing 8pm, Listen Up 8:30pm, Everybody Loves Raymond 9pm

Pretty much all throw-away shows (I could be ok without them), but there isn't anything else on. Still Standing has funny moments, Listen Up has Costanza (and it's not bad), and Raymond is still pretty enjoyable.

Tuesday – Last Comic Standing 8pm, Father of the Pride 9pm, Scrubs 9:30pm

LCS is decent. Father of the Pride is better than I ever thought possible. Honestly, I didn't have high hopes at all, but it delivers on the funny. Scrubs -- I don't really need to say anything about it; great show.

Wednesday – Lost 8pm

Lost ROCKS! I love it. I hope they keep up the good work and don't get goofy with the plot lines. So far it's mostly set-up, but they did shoot a charging polar bear with a handgun on a seemingly tropical island. That's good TV.

Thursday – Joey at 8pm, Will and Grace 8:30pm, The Apprentice 9pm

Joey is also better than I ever thought possible. I actually like the supporting cast better than LeBlanc. Will and Grace is watchable only because of Jack and Karen -- and the fact that Grace has put on weight due to her real life kid. She was horrifyingly gaunt. The Apprentice has a crazy guy in a bow tie named "Raj" -- 'nuff said.

Friday – Nothing specific, sometimes Dateline at 8pm

These are the shows we usually end up watching. The only mandatory shows (the shows we make sure to see and might tape if we’re going to miss them) are Lost, Scrubs, Joey, American Chopper (I can’t remember when it’s on), and The Apprentice. There are always the ubiquitous Cops, Seinfeld, and Friends reruns that always seem to be on. We watch Comedy Central for The Daily Show or if nothing else is on or random MTV shows. HBO actually has good and watchable movies on sometimes, too. One show I would like to get into is Family Guy – they show reruns now at 8pm, but there are other shows we watch on at the same time! Oh well, I guess I could tape them.
